Norbert Benecke studied "Markscheidewesen" at Aachen Technical University, finishing in 1983 as Diplom Ingenieur. After two years with German Mining Authority to receive charter, he started as mine surveyor on an underground coal mine. From 1991 to 2000 he was Head of Department for GIS and Remote Sensing at DSK. Since 2000 Norbert is working with DMT, for the last 3 years as Senior Export for Geoservices for the international mining industry.




Avoiding surprises. Some examples of efficient use of in-seam seismic exploration

The propagation velocity of in-seam seismic (ISS) waves depends on frequency which is also known as dispersion. This dispersion is not only determined by the thickness of the coal seam and its dirt band content (i.e. thickness and position), but also by the rock type and its condition (soft or compact) above and below the coal. Correct interpretation of ISS measurements allows mine operators confirm possible disturbances in extraction area and avoid damages and still stands of the equipment, saving time and costs for repair. This presentation will give an overview about the advantages of using ISS to investigate coal longwall operations before extraction. Practical example out of coal mines in Germany, Czech Republic and Russia will be demonstrated from technical and financial point of view.
